Key changes to the civics test
- Test administration: The test is oral and administered by a USCIS officer.
- Question bank: The total number of potential questions has increased from 100 to 128.
- Number of questions on the test: The officer will ask 20 questions during the interview.
Passing score: An applicant must answer at least 12 out of the 20 questions correctly.
When the test stops: The test will end as soon as the applicant answers 12 questions correctly or 9 questions incorrectly.
Effective date: The new version applies to naturalization applications filed on or after October 20, 2025.
